Because It Is My Blood A Novel Birthright Gabrielle Zevin Books
I only just liked All These Things I've Done, but I won an ARC of this one, so I gave it a read. I was hoping for more Leo after the ending events of the first book, but again everything is narrowly focused on Anya. Nothing around her gets much attention, which bothers me. I want to know more about the world and the other characters, not just Anya.I'm still not sold on this so-called dystopian society. As I said in my review of the first book, the illegal chocolate lost its novelty and just became annoying. There's no real reason why it's illegal, except that it makes a unique setting and clearly pulls readers in. Anya must escape New York, and she does so by heading to a cocao farm in Mexico. The whole plot ends up being about chocolate, much to my annoyance.
I was definitely interested at first though, because I thought we'd get some actual world building as the US is compared to Mexico. Unfortunately, that didn't happen. Instead we get a lesson in growing and harvesting cocao, and a lame explanation that chocolate was expensive and is therefore illegal. The author had some missed opportunities to really make this world feel solid. It would have been more interesting to get details of Anya's second and third stay in Liberty, which are again glossed over. At least then we'd get to learn something about the legal system.
"Anya you know I support you, but aren't there bigger problems in the world than chocolate."
Obviously not.
Even when Anya is back in the city, it's still chocolate, chocolate, chocolate! There is more action, mystery, mafia stuff happening but the focus was still on Anya running the chocolate business. Occasionally, there's a random tidbit that I'm sure was meant to be shocking, but those felt like they were simply stuck in there to be shocking, not to add to the plot.
Maybe it was just a case of mid-trilogy syndrome, but I liked Because It Is My Blood less than the first book. Since there's only one book left, I'll read it, but only because I am curious to see if Anya's idea works.

Because It Is My Blood A Novel Birthright Gabrielle Zevin Books Reviews
This is a book intended for teens - I bought it for the author and did not read the reviews carefully enough.
I love this book. The story is amazing and I read it in less than 24 hours. Glad I had already bought the other two.
The series of books were a real page turner. Very interesting plot. Couldn't wait to get to the next book.
I was hesitant to read this book because the first book was so good that I didn't think a second book could match it. Was I wrong! This book was amazing, every bit as good if not better. I couldn't put it down and finished it in one afternoon, the day I got it. I love Anya and Win and I really hope there are more books to come with these two.
This story is a tale of resiliency and determination. I like that the main character is strong minded young lady that is not tempted by merely her emotions, but logic, as well. The characters hook you and the story line leaves you wanting more and cheering the characters to make certain decisions. The characters don't always veer the way you want them to, but we can't control everything.
Zevin has done it again! Great protagonist
And supporting characters, action and plot twists! Read the first book and this one-you won't be disappointed! On to Book 3.
If you like dystopia, the "Hunger Games", "Divergent", and "Starters", pick up this book. While it has tragic events, the world created by Zevin is memorizing and believable. Anya is a strong female role and a terrific narrator for this 2080 NYC novel (trilogy). It is a shame that more book stores do not have it on the shelf - which is why it's even more important to purchase the series together on . The style prevents dragging and keeps the readers at the edge of their seats. You will not be able to put them down once you start them. I am not once for romance, but the pieces of romance, the question on loyalty, birth-right and love in this book will strike it's audience and keep them thinking way after they finish.
Gabrielle Zevin's second book in the Birthright (I'm assuming) trilogy is a good follow up to All These Things I've Done. The main character, Anya, daughter of notorious "chocolatier crime boss" is determined not to get involved in her father's business. However, the choices made in the first book come back to haunt her and she has to make some hard choices about her life, her love, and even where she lives. Fleeing in the night she is forced to go into hiding at a cocoa farm in Mexico, and chocolate becomes not only what her father "did" but also becomes Anya's life force as well. When old "friends" come to to call, Anya must, once again make some hard choices about not only her life, but her whole family's life and future and return to face some people from her past.
The book as a whole is a strong sequel. Anya needed to find her place in her family's business but do it in her own way. Some of the loose ends tie up a little too nicely, but there were surprises as well along the way. The only thing I did not like is how Anya and Win ends things. After everything they have been through together it just felt a little forced, that something had to tear them apart in this second book, just so they could be brought back together for the the third book. However, I very much liked Win's father's involvement, it felt smart and like the kind of thing Anya would do. I'm looking foward to the next installment in the series. (Aside Also I really liked the cover of this sequel as opposed to the first cover of the first book).
