The Ice Cream Vendor Song edition by Laura McHale Holland Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews
In THE ICE CREAM VENDOR'S SONG, Laura McHale Holland presents forty eight flash fiction short stories.
Each vignette is a complete picture. Some are a snapshot capturing a moment. Others, a short film covering a longer period of time. They range from humorous, surreal, nostalgic, and sad and, for the most part, the characters are everyday people.
A lot of them deal with separation, loss, death and revemge. Others involve children or memories of childhood. "The Golden Sandals" reminded me of the movie, "The Red Shoes." Another had an O. Henry quality. And she presents an interesting twist on "Little Red Riding Hood.
None of the characters are repeated and there is a lot of differentiation between them. The lengths vary from fewer than 100 words to slightly more than one page.
While I didn't like all the stories-I'm not into sci-fi-there were many that were enjoyable. She says a lot in a few words though, in a couple cases, I wanted more.
I received this review copy from Smashwords.
I received this book in exchange for an honest review.
In this very short story collection (some stories are only 1/2 page long!), writer Laura McHale Holland takes us on a wild ride - to some really dark spaces and some fantastical places. I love a lot of the interesting story lines and think she is a clever writer. I know that short stories are some of the hardest to write and I really commend her ability to tell a complete story in so few words. I really enjoyed this collection and look forward to reading more by this author.
The Ice Cream Vendor's Song beckons us to enter a seemingly mundane world where characters and situations live in shadows of enchantment that can turn eerie and terrifying. Every story, sketched out in deft poetic strokes, renders an acute revelation about the pathos and comedy of human interchange.
Take your time as you savor each gem, but do not enter complacently. An ordinary character may morph into a wolf, a machete swinging avenger, or a self-appointed jailer. We shudder, recognizing our own affinity to that madness that can lead us to fall over the edge.
But the songs sing to us also of redemption and love as in Rolling Toward Her Feet, "she weaves her love for him in shades of blue, green, and purple...he sands his love for her on boards of oak and pine..." Each tale catches us with a deep intake of breath as we pause, gather ourselves up, and join in "chasing the ice cream vendor's song."
Laura McHale Holland's flash fiction collection, `The Ice Cream Vendor's Song' is just what today's internet-reared readers need short, punchy, yet emotionally impactful tales of just the right manageable length. At turns sentimental, often poignant and heartbreaking, the short (or very short) stories in this collection do not fail in hitting us where it hurts most.
Indeed, `The Ice Cream Vendor's Song'--despite the stories' individual lengths--is best enjoyed slowly, as each morsel is a rich helping, a close-up view of the human experience served in easy-to-assimilate units. From the romantic ("Rolling Toward Her Feet") to the strange ("The Golden Sandals") to the abrupt ("The Fool"), this eclectic collection of stories descends on our senses in some sort of cadence all its own.
I also love how Holland weaves her sentences--the end result is deliciously poetic and often brimming with pathos. It's a joy to read the lines, regardless of what particular story you're on. Overall, this is a book that deserves to be tried and enjoyed and downloaded. Even better, this can be a great gift to a loved one. Highly recommended!
I received this book free from Library Thing to read and review. The author has produced a unique collection of short stories, most of which are not very long. These stories address all different facets of human nature, some good points and some bad points. The book is ideal to pick up and read whenever you have a few minutes to spend while waiting for someone or something (an appointment a meeting, etc.). Once you read them, these stories will stay with you. Each gives a complete picture, some covering a moment in time while others covering longer periods. They deal with everything possible, from separation to loss to good and bad fortune and so on. None of the stories covers the same subject or has the same moral/lesson/thought. I found these stories to be very interesting and thoughtful, a smorgasbord of life. It is not often that a reader reads something and leaves with much more, but the author has done this. I found myself reading a story and stopping to reflect on it before moving on to the next one. This is not just any book of stories, but a unique collection of tales that give you a great deal of food for thought yet are short enough to cover the issues the author wishes to. This is a collection to keep and go back to whenever you want a breath of fresh air or something worthwhile that is short and sweet.
Ms. Holland produces succinct emotional reality in these economic and sometimes abrupt vignettes of life surprise.
She possesses a unique talent.
McHale Holland has put together a compelling collection of stories. This is a compilation of imagination, sometimes humor, always well-written.
