Not King’s best short fiction volume (That’s “Night Shift”) — but totally worth the read. Classic King.

As always, I find his short reads stronger than his sprawling novels. This is not literary stuff, but it’s deeply satisfying: for me the volume is cranked up, everything is zoomed into tiny but exaggerated details, neon colors, ultra-American, televised, advertised, supersized, melodramatic, manic, stylish, low-brow, iconic and addictive.

Some top stories: Dolan’s Cadillac and Chattery Teeth (both set in the desert instead of Maine), The Moving Finger and Sneakers (trashy, insane, superb; intensely “of their time”), and The House on Maple Street and The End of the Whole Mess (with great sci-fi twists).

Stephen King doesn’t need any help selling books, but I say buy it!

This is one of the best collections of short fiction that I have ever read in any genre, and clearly shows that Stephen King is a much better writer of short fiction than he is of novels. I wish he would write nothing but short fiction after reading this. The book starts with a satisfying tale of revenge in which a mafia boss is buried alive in his cadillac by the husband of one of his murdered victums. The next story, The End of the Whole Mess, is good, but it is a rip-off of the classic Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keyes. In my opinion the best story in the book is Chattery Teeth. A novelty toy winds up saving a business man's life by biting the manhood off of a generation x, punk hitchhiker. The Moving Finger is also well done. Imagine seeing a finger coming out of a shower drain, and as it slowly gets bigger, and bigger, the person seeing it because more, and more insane until he takes a chainsaw to it. Rock and Roll Heaven just delighted me. A couple get lost in the wilderness, and are trapped in a town, and forced to watch dead musicians play nightly rock concerts. Elvis Presley is the mayor. The 5'oclock Club reminded me of one of those weird comic book covers from the 60's that seemed paradoxical. How come nobody can see those monsters besides me? Along with vampire stories, zombies, and a story reminicent of H.P. Lovecraft, there is a Sherlock Holmes pastiche which was a pleasant surprise for me, since I collect Sherlock Holmes pastiches. This was a pretty good mystery, and captured Doyle's idiom fairly accurately. The diversity found in this collection makes me want to see more short fiction by King, and I'd like to see him write in other genre's as well. This collection shows that King's writing skills are improving despite some recent lackluster novels.
What can I say, it's Stephen King. He is an amazing writer in my book (pun intended). I've read all his books, own all his books many in both hardback and digital format and have read them all multiple times. They just keep getting better. I've never been a short story fan but Stephen King never fails to entertain me with anything he writes.
Once again, the gift Stephen King was given at this time in his life, is phenomenally appreciated. Only a couple stories did I skip, for I lost interest from the start, but it didn't take away from the enjoyment this collection of stories brought me. Even if Mr. King never writes another novel or collection of short stories, his legacy will continue for years to come. Kudos!
I love it. I always enjoy his books. I will admit I didn't care for the baseball ones. I am not a baseball fan. I did read them. The rest of the stories made up for it.
I am now only 1/2 way through reading all of the storys in this book, I am impressed. As with any book of short stories, there are some I like a lot and some I don't like at all. There are also a lot in the middle. I was really surprised that the one I like best so far Is The Pretty Pony, which is not what I expect in a Stephen King story. The ones I didn't like so much were those that were predictible - those I could write the ending to after reading the . So far there haven't been too many of those. Even though I thought You Know They Got A Hell of a Band was predictable, I enjoyed it.
I gave it a 4 because while it was good, it wasn't exceptionally good. But that is what you expect with a collection of short stories.
First off, I'm a huge King fan. I've read everything the man has put out. Now, I'm going back through his books, re-reading ones I hadn't read in years. This one, Nightmares and Dreamscapes, I pulled off my bookshelf a week ago and decided to start there.

They are some really good stories in here You know They Have A Hell of a Band; Dolan's Cadillac; Sorry, Right Number; Night Flyer; Umney's Last Case are stand-outs in my opinion. Other great stories are Suffer the Little Children; Rainy Season; Chattery Teeth and Home Delivery.

I liked this collection a lot and give it three stars b/c they are some stories that I read that I was just "okay" with. But hey, then again I'm a Constant Reader and I'll read anything he writes. If you're looking to add this book into your collection if you haven't already or if you're just getting into King's work, this one would be a good place to start in his collected books.

Plus, the cover of the hardback is awesome!!
