The Summer Letters Elyse Douglas 9781545392966 Books Reviews

History repeats itself in this tale of mystery and love.
In 1953, battered, frightened and dis-illusioned Rhonda, in an act of courage, leaves her abusive husband and runs to Brandy Beach, Massachusetts. While she's picking up the pieces of her broken heart and her life, she meets handsome and charming Hal. He's also in Brandy Beach nursing a broken heart given to him by his cheating girlfriend while he was away in the war. The two meet and begin a wonderfully intense yet at the same time fresh and hopeful courtship that is detailed beautifully in the letters that they write to each other while Hal is away doing his job as a pilot for a commercial airline. Then, Rhonda's husband finds her at the beach house and delivers a brutal beating. Hal comes in and stops him, but not before he has caused extensive harm to Rhonda. As Rhonda recovers in the hospital, it becomes clear that her mind has been shattered and she may recover physically – but never mentally. Her husband, meanwhile, has ended his own life and her parents have come to place her in a mental institution. Hal is lost, alone and in the darkness that he found himself in after the war.
In 2017, Vanessa is staying at the same beach house that Rhonda ran to in 1953 and discovers the love letters between Hal and Rhonda in the very spot that Rhonda had left them. She reads them and wants to find out more about the two lovers. Vanessa also meets handsome Matt on the same beach as Rhonda met Hal and the two hit it off. But, Matt is haunted by his past and the sudden, mysterious death of his wife. The pair seems to be on the same path as Hal and Rhonda from 1953.
As the story unfolds, the two couple's paths intertwine even further and what seems to be a tragic end for the both of them takes a different turn when history – even though it repeated itself – rights itself into what was meant to be all along.
When I first began reading, I had the sinking feeling I was not going to like either the female protagonist nor her storyline. However, as I continued reading I began to relate to Vanessa and her situation. She had gone to Brandy Beach for the summer to get away from her recent divorce and write her second novel. Renting an old cottage built in the 1950s and finding a hidden stash of love letters puts her on a path of no return.

I enjoyed the way Elyse Douglas separated the novel into Then (1953) and Now (2017) based on what Vanessa reads in the old letters written in 1953 and what happened during her stay at Brandy Beach in 2017. Not only did Ms. Douglas make Vanessa and Matt come alive to her reading audience but she breathed life into Rhonda and Hal Randall, the letter writers from 1953. I felt connected to all 4 of them as they were carefully fleshed out in their own words; through their letters and conversations.

Even minor characters and life in small town Brandy Beach came alive through Ms. Douglas' able handling of her novel "The Summer Letters." There is much to like in this story and it is the inquisitive and persistent nature of Vanessa that makes the entire plot come together.

This is one of those stories that will bring tears to your eyes and laughter to your lips as we follow Vanessa on her search to find out the ultimate destiny of Rhonda and Hal. Vanessa, after some controversy, also brings Matt (a long time resident of Brandy Beach) into the search for the letter writers of 1953. Vanessa connects deeply to Rhonda through their shared life experiences and refuses to give up her search until she finds out what ultimately happened to her.

Yes, this is a love story, a love story of the best kind, one that ends on a happy note, though there is enough heart ache among the various main characters to last a life time for anyone. The storyline has numerous plot twists and you will never know from one moment to the next where and how it will end. You may find yourself reflecting on your own personal love story or challenging your belief in true love.

Definitely an easy but compelling read. Highly recommended.
